How to Play Poker

Omaha games

Omaha Hi-Lo (Omaha 8)

Omaha where the pot is cut in half: one half for the best high hand, the other for the best low hand, if anyone has one.

Same deal as Omaha

Four cards each, then the flop, the turn and the river. Every hand is exactly two of your cards plus three from the board, just like Pot Limit Omaha.

In mixed games it is played fixed limit, like Limit Hold'em: small bets before the flop and on the flop, big bets on the turn and river, four bets a round.

Two hands at once

At the showdown you make two hands: your best high hand and your best low hand. Each can use a different two of your cards. Half the pot goes to the best high, half to the best low. Winning both halves is called a scoop.

What counts as a low

Eight or better
Five cards of different ranks, all 8 or lower. A 9 or higher means no low.
Aces are low
For the low hand an ace counts as 1, the best low card.
Straights and flushes are fine
They do not spoil a low. A-2-3-4-5 is a straight for the high and a perfect low too.
Compare from the top
Read the highest card first: 7-5-4-2-A beats 8-4-3-2-A because 7 is lower than 8.
  1. The wheel

The best low there is. Straights and flushes do not count against you, so this is perfect.

    • Five of clubs
    • Four of diamonds
    • Three of hearts
    • Two of spades
    • Ace of clubs
  2. Six low

Read a low from its highest card down: a six low beats any seven low.

    • Six of diamonds
    • Four of hearts
    • Three of clubs
    • Two of clubs
    • Ace of hearts
  3. Seven low

    Still a great low.

    • Seven of spades
    • Six of hearts
    • Four of diamonds
    • Three of clubs
    • Two of hearts
  4. Eight low

The worst low that still counts in an eight-or-better game.

    • Eight of hearts
    • Seven of clubs
    • Six of spades
    • Five of diamonds
    • Four of clubs

No low? High takes it all

A low needs three different cards of 8 or lower on the board, because three board cards always play. If nobody can make a low, the best high hand wins the whole pot.
