Stop Value-Betting Into Hands That Beat You
A good hand on the river isn't automatically a bet. A one-question test for working out when a value bet is really a donation.

You've got a good hand. A really good hand. The river comes, your heart rate goes up, and every cell in your body says bet.
Hold that thought for one second, because there's a line that's worth tattooing somewhere you'll see it: the question isn't "am I ahead?", it's "what calls me?"
A hand you've definitely played
You've got on the button. The big blind defends and the flop comes . Lovely. You bet, they call.
Turn: . You bet again, they call again.
River: . The board now reads and the big blind checks to you.
Top pair, good kicker. Seems like a bet. So let's do the test and list the hands that call.
- Any 8 just made a straight. Calls happily, maybe raises.
- Q-K made a king-high straight. Same.
- Two pairs like J-T and T-9, and sets. All call.
- A-J? It's ahead of you. Calls.
- Weaker jacks like J-8 (whoops, that's a straight too) or J-5? They might call. They also might fold, because this river is terrifying for them as well.
Look how short the "worse hands that call" list is. Almost everything that calls has you beat. That's not a value bet, it's a donation to a good cause.
Check it back, take your showdown, and feel smug when they table J-5.
But don't overcorrect
The opposite mistake is just as expensive. The rule: when you're checked to on the river, value-bet the hands that worse hands will call, even on a scary board. Plenty of players see four to a flush, get spooked and check back two pair against someone who'd happily call with one pair.
Being scared of the board isn't a strategy. Count the hands that call you.
Count your streets
Think of it as streets of value. Before the flop bet, ask how many streets your hand wants to get paid on. Top pair, weak kicker is usually one or two streets. A set is three. If you've already had your two streets, the third one is often where you pay the other guy.
The pocket version
Next time the river comes and you're itching to bet, name three worse hands that call. If you can't name them quickly, check.
